Skincare for Jet-Setters

Dry recirculated air, fluctuating cabin pressure and long hours of travel can leave your skin feeling dehydrated, dull, and stressed. Marvice shares her skincare tips for before, during and after your flight to keep your skin radiant.

PRE-FLIGHT RADIANACE PREP

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Start hydrating your skin and body well before you board the plane recommends Marvice, Master Skin Therapist. “Drink plenty of water the day before and on the day of your flight. Hydrated skin is more resilient and less prone to drying out. Also, avoid salty snacks like peanuts onboard, as they can lead to water retention and puffiness.”

For an extra boost, use a hydrating sheet mask like Dermaroller Silk Mask the night before your flight to give an added layer of moisture and nourishment.

Pre-flight TLC for skin

Consider going makeup-free or remove your makeup with a double cleanse immediately before you board says Marvice. If you’re on a long-haul flight do another cleanse after about 10 hours, and in any event, before you leave the plane

Follow with a rich, hydrating moisturiser to lock in moisture. Look for products with hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glycerine, which help retain moisture and strengthen the skin barrier. Diego dalla Palma 24-Hour Intensive Hydro Plumping Cream works beautifully for most skin types.

Sun protection at 30,000 feet

Did you know radiation levels are twice as high at 30,000 feet than on the ground? Even inside a plane, UV rays can penetrate the windows.

“Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 (ideally higher) to protect your skin from UV damage”, advises Marvice. “This is super important if you have a window seat. Diego dalla Palma Professional Supreme Uniforming & Illuminating Cream SPF 50, featured 3 stabilized Vitamin C and DetoxLIGHT will protect you from those powerful UVA, UVB and UV Blue Infrared rays.” If you need to re-apply sunscreen, jane iredale powder me SPF 30 dry sunscreen comes as a handy choice

IN-FLIGHT SKINCARE ESSENTIALS

Sip, sip, hooray!

Keep hydrating throughout your flight by drinking plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they dehydrate you and mess with your sleep.

Carry a hydrating facial mist like steam-distilled rose water in your carry-on. Spritzing your face with a mist every few hours will keep your skin hydrated and refreshed.

Moving around regularly helps healthy blood circulation and staves off puffiness, especially on long flights. Stretch those legs and keep that blood flowing.

Moisturise mid-flight

Reapply your moisturizer mid-flight, especially on long-haul flights says Marvice.

Don’t forget your lips – apply a nourishing lip balm with a SPF to prevent chapping and dryness. Cabin air can also dry out your hands, so pop a travel-sized hand cream in your bag to keep your hands soft and moisturized. Diego dalla Palma Professional Lip Manic Plumping Lip Oil with organic jojoba and sweet almond oil and Janssen Cosmetic Lip Mask are always in my carry-on.

Eye care

Flying can cause puffiness and dark circles around the eyes. Use a cooling eye gel or eye mask to reduce puffiness and refresh the delicate skin around your eyes. Janssen Cosmetic Blue Fresh Eye Gel and Diego dalla Palma Professional Reviving Hyalu-gel for Eye Contour works wonders.

Hands off

Airplanes can harbour germs, so try to avoid touching your face with your hands to prevent transferring bacteria to your skin, cautions Marvice.

POST-FLIGHT GLOW UP

Your priority here is to prevent breakouts and rehydrate your skin advises Marvice:

Cleanse to refresh

Wash your face and hands just before you arrive or immediately after you land to remove any dirt, oil and recirculated microbes that may have built up on your skin during the flight.

Again, follow with your usual moisturizer to lock in hydration.

Treat dehydrated skin

As soon as you can, treat your skin to a purifying mask for deep cleansing; a hydrating or firming face mask to help restore its natural glow. Choose from Diego dalla Palma Professional Purifying Peel-off Mask, Nourishing and Repairing Absorbing Mask or Anti-aging Firming Massage Mask will bring your skin back to life.

Rest and rejuvenate

While it’s tempting to go out partying, give your skin time to recover by getting plenty of rest. A good night’s sleep will help rejuvenate your skin and reduce any signs of fatigue, especially around the eyes.

Hydrate inside and out

Drink plenty of water to help your skin hydrate and stave off the drying effects of any air conditioning.

Turn the shower to lukewarm as hot water can dry out skin. Then slather yourself from top to toe with a rich body lotion. Diego dalla Palma Professional  Multi-tasking Cream ALL-IN-ONE Body Cream is perfect for keeping skin soft and supple.

Travelling can be tough on your skin says Marvice, but with these simple skincare tips, you can keep your complexion looking its best from take-off to touchdown. Safe travels and happy glowing ✈️
